TThe Southwest has been a community of “migrants” since before the Spanish conquest. In 1912, Arizona became a state. Before, were we “Them?”
For 100 years, the US has tried and failed to keep people out, not recognizing how often this country’s policies produce migration. Learning this history, our involvement in other countries, brings perspective.
Refugees come, establish new lives, becoming part of us. Detaining elders, who fled US policy in Central America; accosting legal refugees; murdering US citizens; detaining two-year-olds are dichotomous to justice. Shredding our community isn’t policy. Protecting one another is.
